I chose to explore Kahoot! and Socrative as classroom assessment tools for this activity. In the past I have used both of these tools in my classroom. I have found that students are highly engaged and motivated when using these forms of assessments.
Kahoot! is more "game based" and is a great tool to use when reviewing content with the class. It creates a competitive motivating atmosphere, giving the teacher immediate feedback on student knowledge after each question. Previously I have used this tool in my Unit Studies class to review about the Rock Cycle. This program is useful because you can embed photos to be used with questions. I found this very beneficial when asking questions about rocks and minerals. One negative aspect regarding this tool is the only question type that can be created is multiple choice. This can be limiting for some content areas. In the future I may use this tool for reading comprehension questions, taking class polls, or giving math quizzes (students use a scratch piece of paper to show work) This assessment can be competitive, because students earn scores that are made public after each question. When I have used this program in the past, I had to remind students Kahoot! is a learning tool and reviewed sportsmanship before, during, and after the activity.
I highly enjoyed learning more about Socrative. I am excited to use it within my classroom. It is beneficial that teachers can create multiple choice, short answer, and true/false questions using this tool. This gives teachers the ability to test the depth of student knowledge, as well as flexibility when creating assessments for different content areas. Also, this program saves student responses and gives teachers the ability to view data in a spreadsheet! In the future I can see my team using this tool to create common assessments for our 4th graders. I believe that this form of assessment can be used in all content areas.

Socrative: Spy X: Cracking the Code (1-3)
I can't try your rock cycle Kahoot without the game pin - can you send post that? The link just asks me to sign in to Kahoot. Your Socrative quiz is awesome. I like how you can save it as a PDF. It's a great tool to use for all kinds of subject areas. :)
ReplyDeleteI love that Kahoot is a game based assessment tool. I think the kids will love it!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of having easy and accessible common assessments that you can share with your team! I was a fan of Socrative, too.
